I hadn’t planned to do this as a project, but the kids show such interest in the bottles of paint, that I switched gears and put out the plastic and opened the lids.

H and M were the first to try this with me. H began very carefully with his shapes, and M quickly shook out lots of paint onto his paper. They found out how the more paint you pour, the more it pools, and that you can layer colours on top.

Look I made a snowman!” H

“It’s like pouring maple syrup… I’m noticing a lot of texture.” H

“Can I do a hand print?” M

“”Jeez, this orange is hot” H

“Can you mix colours?” M

“I’m going to make green.” M

M was having a great time immersed in pure colour without worrying about shape, form, or lines.

“I don’t know why you didn’t mention this in the first place, this is wonderful.” M

“I’m trying to make a bee colour… I think I over-did the yellow. I need a bit more black.” H

“Isn’t that beautiful? I’d call that a rusty colour. I want it to be a bit more coppery.” H

“I didn’t know painting like this could be so much fun!” M

“What did you put down first M? Orange?” H

“Yah, orange as a base.” M

“Come quick, get the camera! Look at this. It looks like a chestnut.” M

The next day C and Mi tried the paint, and C tried to make a tiger. He used a straw to blow the paint around, attempting to make the shape of the body and legs. What a task!

On Friday, L, Q, and J were jumping up and down excited to begin the term getting messy. They went through paint quicker than I could make it for them.

“Messy, messy, messy!” Q

“Yuck yuck yuck!” L

J’s first picture started with what looked like a ladybug, and then transformed into a water melon.

“Now I need some grapes.” J

They turned into a team of mini Jackson Pollocks!

“I’m a paint monster! Messy!” Q

“I wanna mix it!” L

“Ooh look at this, I see yellow disappearing.” Q

They didn’t stop at the bottles either, they’re hands became tools too! The messier the better!

“This is going to be a cool colour when I wash my hands.” J

“I’m trying to make it dry faster by rubbing it.” Q

I had to wrap things up in time to get the kids all cleaned up, and by the end of the week I was getting very low on paint! We might even go further with the masterpieces, adding more… and more! Stay tuned.
